Yesterday we started a series of YouTube talks from our Boozemusings Community, Boom Rethink the Drink. At this point these talks are simply published conversations. They are edited to remove long pauses and “ums” but not as meticulously filtered as we’re able to do with our written community blog. For those of us participating from our community, publishing these talks is a new adventure in vulnerability. And on that note, the first of our topics is well worth a share.
We are talking in this video about the culture that shames many of us with an outdated language. The traditional language used to describe what is now often called alcohol use disorder. The limited language that we use to describe the vast spectrum of alcohol addiction. Especially a word that many of us refuse to use even years after we stopped drinking. Alcoholic.
The two of us discussing this decided that rather than holding onto the label alcoholic and rather than calling ourselves sober – a word that sounds so dull and heavy that it cannot begin to describe the liberation of living alcohol free!- we will talk of reaching for Sobrenity!
Sobrenity! We picked up that wonderful word from another member of our community named Maggy. Maggy is a woman who has spent years in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous is now in Refuge Recovery, and has done Hip Sobriety School as well. She is in many respects an expert on all things involved in the Discovery that is Recovery !
Sobrenity! as defined by Maggy :
A fellow back in my AA days smashed together the words sobriety and serenity and I always so so SO love that… for a couple of reasons. Sobriety without serenity (read recovery) can be miserable, and the word sober has such serious joyless connotations in the English language. But put them together and it feels like pure whimsy, pure magic, the real deal. The freedom that we’re all after.
We Invite you to Rethink the Drink and Seek Sobrenity! :
Do you seek sobrenity?
Don’t wait for an eternity
To open that door
It’s not the one you’ve chosen before
It might be the breath of fresh air that you need
And have been unknowingly waiting for
You don’t need to continually sink to the floor
Bravery and courage is what it will take
But it could just save you from further heartache
Could now be the right time
To put down the beer, spirits or wine?
It’s entirely your choice
If alcohol is no longer serving you
If it’s letting you down and will continue to do
Don’t wait to be kind to yourself
You deserve more than that
You can change your mind
Choose a different hat
If not now….when?
This time in your life
It doesn’t define you
You might have a problem currently
But you aren’t the problem
It’s true, believe me
It’s just a chapter
It’s not the whole book
Part 2 of your life
It can start right now
Take a look?
Open your mind to the possibilities !
Of a new reality in sobrenity

We are an independent, anonymous and private community who share resources, support and talk it through every day. It helps to have a community behind you in a world where alcohol is the only addictive drug that people will question you for NOT using
