If you’ve been drinking too much during these past two months of the Covid19 lock down, you are not alone. It’s not a surprise that in countries where alcohol was deemed essential the sale of alcoholic beverages is booming. In the UK, sales were up by 22% in March. US sales of alcoholic beverages have risen 55 percent, spirits have seen the highest increase with sales jumping by 75 percent , wine by 66 percent and beer by 42 percent. With the world economy spiraling and political battles waging people are numbing down to escape the stress and uncertainty.
There is a lot of great comedy that you can pull from the Covid19 binge drinking culture. Like this spoof on the Cheers theme from Stephen Colbert.
We drink when we’re bored and we drink when we’re stressed and we drink when we are lonely so hey! Covid19 is the perfect storm for a good long, justifiable binge. I know that if I were still drinking I’d be immersed in it. There would be a few cases of wine included in my Covid19 lock down supplies. If I were still drinking I’d be telling myself that everyone else was doing that too. I’d feel connected in spirit to the world around me, as we all numbed out a bit alone at home. If I were still drinking I’d be telling myself that the Covid19 lockdown was a perfect opportunity to enjoy a glass of wine while making lunch for my family. I’d be telling myself that a bit of Mommy Juice throughout the day was essential to my sanity!
It might feel a bit like this.
But sadly ….
If I were still drinking I’d be waking at 3am, with a hot head and a dry mouth, full of anxiety at not remembering what I’d said for the last hour before falling asleep, regretting the glass that had led to a bottle that required I open another … again.
If I were still drinking I would be exhausted and stressed and resentful and feeling the need to escape and I would think that it was a result of the crisis in the world when actually it would mostly be a result of the wine.
If you’ve been drinking too much during this Covid19 lockdown, and you are ready to stop or take a break come talk to us. Connecting to people who are talking about how great it feels to NOT drink can really make all the difference when you are trying to stop. That beautiful picture at the beginning of this post is an alcohol free Elder flower cocktail. It will cure your Covid19 binge drinking hangover and boost your immune system too! Sometimes starting a day that will end alcohol free is as simple as reading about something like that instead of just seeing memes all over social media that encourage you to drink another day away.
I’m glad I’m not drinking and haven’t in five years because this morning I woke at peace. I hopped in the car with my 20 year old daughter who’s home from school, and together we watched the sunrise as the storm clouds shifted. Genuine self care is what we need to weather this pandemic. Self care that doesn’t leave you hungover.
Come hang out with us and we’ll help you think it through. It seems like a good idea sometimes to wash away the stress of the day in a river of wine but more often then not, if you do that too often, you can end up washing away you.
If you’re “sober curious” … If you are drinking too much too often and want to stop or take a break…or if you have stopped drinking and are trying to stick to sober! Talk to Us.
We are an independent, anonymous and private community who share resources, support and talk it through every day. It helps to have a community behind you in a world where alcohol is the only addictive drug that people will question you for NOT using

Sometimes to realize the worth of the anchor we need to feel the storm
Drop your anchor
Be firmly moored
Be in the moment
To chaos gently close the door
Breathe in the calm
Breathe out any alarm
You can withstand the storms
Though you fear you might break
Just know in a crisis
You’ve got what it takes
The ways that you feel
Are valid and true
Take care to look inside
For you can only control you ⚓
