I am a firm believer that in our self-improvement efforts, it’s not possible to move AWAY from something, rather you have to move TOWARDS something else. In my case, I have seen glimpses of my better self. At times, I’ve even caught flashes of my BEST self. That person, the ideal version of me, has found balance in his life and is emotionally, spiritually, and physically healthy.
An unhealthy relationship with alcohol is contrary to all those things. So, because I want to become the best version of myself, my relationship with alcohol has to be a healthy one. Perhaps that means deliberate and effective moderation, or maybe that means complete abstinence. For me, the jury is still out on that one.
But what the jury is NOT out on is because I am on a journey of becoming the best possible version of me (the WHY) I must have a healthy relationship with alcohol (the HOW). As the saying goes, “When the WHY is clear, the HOW is easy.” I’m not sure I agree the HOW is easy, but the more clear your WHY, the HOW is much simpler. I want to be the best version of myself. I cannot be that person and have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. It’s that simple.
As you follow your own path of self-improvement, remember that it’s easy to become distracted by the HOW. Keep your focus on your WHY. You’re not moving away from drinking, you’re moving toward something else. Something better. Something life changing. I wish you the best of success on your journey.
