An Ode to Freedom From a Newly Sober Mum

Mummmy was a misfit, the girl with bright red hair
She didn’t find life easy,
Despite her parents care

Always feeling out of place
Not quite there, some other place

And as the teenage years approached
She found the bottle and it spoke:

“Come dance and play
I’ll set you free,
No need to fear when you’re with me”

And so the journey did begin
Of wasted hours, spite and sin

Of secrets made, and lies be told
To loved ones dear
For fear they’d scold

The years went by and still my mind,
Thought alcohol was being kind

My friend, my mate, my hearts desire
Who needs real life, when booze gets you higher?

Except that’s really not the case,
But I was wrapped in its embrace

I couldn’t climb out of the hole,
I’d dug myself
With a corkscrew and my soul

But somewhere on the horizon still
I knew there was more
I’d had my fill

And slowly as my spirit woke
I found myself, my true voice spoke

“Is this really where you want to be”

“There’s more to life, come look and see”

And so I took my last first step,
I googled help
And up Boom leapt

What, you mean there’s more like me?
People talking
Openly

About their thoughts, online, on Zoom
I don’t even have to leave the room

I simply post, and words appear
Advice and help
Friends new and dear

And so I say
From the bottom of my heart,
So thankful to share
