I used to think that I drank too much because I didn’t love myself enough or respect myself enough but I was wrong
I didn’t respect or love myself enough because I drank –
I think that alcohol is the biggest bully I’ve ever beaten. and like all bullies, it is a bugger to beat because it destroys your self-respect, makes you feel worthless, and often times the only thing you think will make you feel better – is the approval of that bully
So here are four posts ( open them with the blue titles) to inspire you to beat the bully if you’re struggling today
“I am not weak because I can’t drink like others. I am strong because I don’t.”
Drinking is this seemingly innocuous guy who sits down by my side on vacation or out to dinner and whispers in my ear
“See, look at them. They drink way more than you do and they get to drink. You’re so dramatic, such a buzzkill. You think you’re so important. You think you really have a problem. You don’t have a problem. Just relax already and have a drink.”
And I look around that restaurant and I start to believe him. Then a week later I tell myself I won’t drink that day and eventually I do.
He comes to me and then oh so gently holds my face one inch from the surface of the water. He doesn’t shove me way down into a rock bottom, but just enough for me to not get air. It’s time for that to stop.
Alcohol took me aside into a quiet corner… just the two of us… divided me from the pack of my friends and family who were normal drinkers … and when things started to go very wrong in my relationship with alcohol I felt like it was my fault. Everyone else seemed to be fine hanging out with my bully. My bully was their friend.
It feels good to drink a bit, we want to feel good so we drink a bit more, the more we drink the more we need the drink to feel good. The after-effect of drinking too much is that we feel insecure, unhappy, unattractive, sleep-deprived, in pain…which makes us feel like crap….so we drink again to feel good. It can become an endless cycle which for many ends horrifically.
Humility, Gurrrl Power and Sober Badassery
Sober for me is empowerment.
Which started with humility.
It is developing my absolute righteous sense of SELF.
Which I do with the help of this community.
Sober is My LIFE DEFINED BY ME
Not what my culture wants to sell me. Not what my culture wants to sell me about how inconsequential daily drinking should be. And not what my culture wants to sell me about the right way to get sober.
Sober rocks!
And it started with humility
I will not drink today.
