So many people drink alcohol to feel free. That freedom had started to feel more like bondage to me. Sobriety is a revelation that starts with a sense of frustration. Sobriety is a journey that begins when you start to question why alcohol wins.
Why did I stop drinking?
I wanted the chains to break
They were becoming too tight
Too many decisions to make
Not worth the fight
I wanted to shake myself free
Dust off the dirt
I wanted to learn better how to process the hurt
I don’t need a drug just to be me
And in my down time I wanted to feel free
To live without the alcohol voice screaming in my ear
To live my life with less health fears
To live without being the cause of more tears
To live more presently, more focused and clear
Sobriety is a solution that starts with a question.
What if everything we think about drinking is a lie?
Fed to us all our lives till we actually die
If we let it take over
Pure ethanol actually tastes like shit
That’s why they have to carefully disguise it
Do we mostly want booze because we think everyone is drinking it?
FOMO has a powerful effect really doesn’t it
See the ones at the bar
Having a better time by far
Are they really?
Or is getting progressively pissed just stopping them thinking clearly?
The happy people image in booze ads is carefully designed
They wouldn’t sell much if the showed the other side
The reality of many drowning in beer and wine
And it’s not the people’s fault
Despite what others might say
It’s alcohols’ default to not be a moderate drug ok?
Is it Time to try Sobriety?
In case you are wondering just ask your gut 😃🤷
But do I really need to stop?
How do I know if I should just not have alot?
What if my hangover is colouring my thinking?
Do I really want to stop drinking
At least for a bit
It’s not really a bad problem
Well ask yourself right now
As you stare at your reflection
And study your face
Would you be reading this if it wasn’t the case?
If you didn’t suspect with boozing
You could be in danger of eventually losing
That it is no longer serving you
Would you be reading this far down the page too?
You could take a break from the booze for a bit
Call out your alcohol voice
Assess it and see if it still feels like a choice
And listen to your gut
It’s authentic and true
See what it has to say
‘Cos that’s the real you
I have to be honest here
I wanted a quick fix
Things in my life were turning to shit
I joined Boom
Found friends in this room
And I was learning so much pretty soon
I was so proud of myself
My number count
I’d regularly say
It’s a huge achievement I think
Choosing and keeping the decision not to drink
But did it fix everything in my life?
That would be a resounding NO Nah stopping drinking wasn’t a magical fix
But life’s alot easier without booze in the mix
I didn’t get a celebration at 6 months
Or a sober medal
Though for so long I kept my foot to the pedal
But perhaps sobriety is it’s own reward in fact
‘Cos it’s a mindful, kindful, healthy act
And alcohol, well
We aren’t really made to drink that!
Sobriety is Change
When you want to be different
More than stay the same
That’s when the whole damn game can change
Sobriety is Clarity
What you tend to focus on grows
So focus on what you value the most
If you concentrate on being sober
Gradually alcohol becomes a ghost
That’s when there’s no stopping you
And you’ll quit being it’s host
Sobriety is Perspective
Re-train your brain well
Read and open your mind
It believes all the lies
Or the truths that you tell
