As Dry January is winding down, our Boom Rethink the Drink Community is getting ready to start our second of twelve annual alcohol-free challenges, with a singing contest for A Tuned in February. Back in December (what we call A December you CAN Remember) we started the song contest with a challenge to write alcohol-free inspiration lyrics to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Favorite Things, and then we continued that theme in January with the Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Rod Stewart, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Now it’s time to RECORD these great songs and get them out there where people can hear them.
Come Join us and share the support and inspiration – details about our online community and our alcohol-free inspiration song contest are at the end of this post.
Wonderful
based on Wonderwall by Oasis
Today is gonna be the day
That I’m gonna put my drinking down
I know, I’ve said it all before
But it feels different this time ‘round
I don’t believe that drinking has done anything for me
And it’s time to change
I heard the word out on the street
There’s a site that sure could help me out
It’s filled with people just like me
And they know what drinking’s all about
We’re gonna help each other find the path, to set us free
And it’s time to change
And all the times I’ve tried to quit were daunting
And all the mornings hungover were haunting
There were many times I thought
I could not work this out
But I’ve got to try
Because maybe, I’m gonna be the one who saves me
And after all
Life is wonderful
Today was finally the day
That I went and put my last drink down
I know, to take it day by day
And to never let the past gain ground
I don’t believe that drinking has done anything for me
And it’s time to change
And all the times I’ve tried to quit were daunting
And all the mornings hungover were haunting
There were many times I thought
I could not work this out
But I’ve got to try
Because maybe, I’m gonna be the one who saves me
I’m gonna be the one who saves me
And after all
Life is wonderful

My Best AF Things
Fresh vacuumed carpet
and pedicured toenails
Pine-scented candles
and “no unread emails”
The utter confidence
when a child sings
These are a few of my best AF things
Almond-milk lattes
and butterscotch pudding
Touchdowns and field goals
and he does the cooking
Playing a poker game
hand filled with Kings
These are a few of my best AF things
Notes from my daughter
with her unique spelling
Kids getting ready
for school without yelling
A tiny hummingbird
whizzing its wings
These are a few of my best AF things.
When the wine witch,
Comes a calling,
When I’m feeling off,
I simply remember my best AF things,And then I don’t feel so lost.
PJs and warm socks
and long cozy mornings
Old Christmas music
that plays on my heartstrings
Watching as winter birds
fly on bright wings
These are a few of my best AF things!
Waking up early
and feeling so smitten
With bright eyes lacking
their ugly old bruising
Crystal clear memories
wrapped up in love
These are a few of my best AF things
Bright shiny eyes
and the coffee‘s a brewing
Mornings are great
and I don’t feel like spewing
Shame and regret are gone
spreading my wings
These are a few of my best AF things.
Bright winter mornings
with birds on my feeder
6 hours of snoozing
while my baby’s sleeping
Grocery delivery
no wine he will bring
These are a few of my favorite AF things!
When the Blues Bite!
When I’m Lonely
When I‘m Feel-ling Sad
I simply remember I’m finally FREE
and then I don’t Feel Sooooo Bad!
When the wine witch,
Comes a calling,
When I’m feeling off,
I simply remember my best AF things,And then I don’t feel so lost.

Paint it Free
alcohol-free inspiration sung to music by the Rolling Stones
I go into a bar that’s gross and dark and black
I see the people talking, sense is what they lack
I see people drink their drinks and think they’re having fun
I used to be that way but now I think it’s dumb
I turn the TV on, beer ads are all I see
They used to turn me on, but now they’re not for me
I see people being duped by big business, that’s a fact
It’s time we ditch this shit and all start a brand new act.
I wanna paint it free, free, free, free…..a world booze free.
I wanna paint it free, free, free, free…..a world booze free.

I’ve Looked at Booze From Both Sides Now
alcohol-free inspiration sung to music by Joni Mitchell
Sips and sips of fancy wine
And saying it’s all really fine
I don’t have a care at all
It’s wine … not real hard alcohol.
I’ve kept my job
My family’s fed
I always make it home to bed
And maybe I deserve a treat
I’m stressed, life’s hard, and I feel beat.
But now my head is killing me
I have so much anxiety
It seems I can’t have fun at all
Unless I’m drinking alcohol.
I’ve looked at booze from both sides now
From drunk and scared
To free somehow
And here’s one thing I know for sure
There is no quick or easy cure.
You have to love yourself a lot
And maybe ditch some friends, or not
Create new roads to journey through
And get to know the best of YOU.
So look at booze from both sides now
From trapped and stuck to free as f*ck
Cuz booze is not your friend at all
You really don’t need alcohol.

Heard it through the Grapevine
alcohol-free inspiration sung to Music by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Ooo I heard it through the grapevine
No longer would you be mine
Ooo I heard it through the grapevine
And I’m just about to lose my wine
Honey, honey yeah
You know that a man ain’t supposed to fly
These tears of joy I just can’t hide
Losin’ you creates a life for me
‘Cuz you don’t mean jack to me
You could have told me yourself
That you are poison, and nothin else
Instead I heard it through the grapevine
No longer would you be mine
Ooo I heard it through the grapevine
And I’m just about to lose my wine
Honey, honey yeah

Alky Fray
alcohol-free inspiration sung to Maggie May by Rod Stewart
Wake up Alky
I think I’ve got something to say to you
It’s late September and I really shouldn’t be drinking you
All you did was wreck my head and in the morning left me sick in bed
Oh Alky I wish I’d never had the taste
You made a first class fool out of me
Cus’ I was drunk as a fool can be
You stole my soul and that’s a pain I can do without
All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand but you’re caused me to suffer and mother did I suffer you wore me out
I used to like drugs and booze but l felt my liver being abused
Oh Alky I wish I’d never had the taste
I suppose I could collect myself and and stop drinking you
Then find myself a rock-n-roll band that needs a sober hand
Oh Alky I wish I’d never had the taste
