Ode to a Genuinely Merry Christmas

To everyone working to stay truly present this holiday season, the BOOM Rethink the Drink Community offers this alcohol-free inspiration from our 2022 archive – Staying sober does not have to feel dry!
‘Twas a Sober December
and all through my mind
ran a list of excuses
why I should drink wine –
Now I know that I promised
this month I’d be good –
I’d quit poisoning my body
and take care as I should!
But just when I thought
these days were a breeze,
along came my triggers
to tempt and to tease –
First I was hungry,
but the deli was closed –
with no food in my belly,
my anger arose!
Then there were problems
with family and work,
Insensitive neighbors,
And my husband
(the jerk!)
This led to exhaustion,
Just how could I rest?!
I was dealing with cravings,
An unwelcome guest!
I sprang to my feet,
to the kitchen I flew –
I rounded the corner,
The wine rack in view!
The bottles, they called me –
They knew me by name!
They shimmered and rattled
and spun just the same!
Suddenly more bottles
came on the scene –
Wine had joined Liquor
to sweeten the scheme!
They danced on the counter,
They jumped in the sink –
They grabbed their own glasses
and poured me a drink!
I stepped back from the counter
and shrieked at the sight –
The bottles had wings,
and leaping, took flight!
I ducked as they splashed me,
but kept my mouth closed –
I squinted my eyes
and covered my nose!
They circled around me,
and laughed as they flew –
But I spied an old broomstick
and knew what to do –
I swung at those bottles,
knocking them clear,
And raced to the window
to let out a cheer:
“Out, Vodka and Tonic!
Out, White Wine and Spritzer!
Go, Lager and Gin Fizz
and Chambord Elixir!”
Through the window they fled
with such a great clatter –
As they skimmed over rooftops,
I heard a few shatter!
Relief overcame me,
I had passed this great test –
The bottles had tempted,
The Witch did her best!
With pure satisfaction,
I climbed to my room –
And shared a fine victory
with my dear friends on BOOM.
I knew in the morning
my head would be clear,
I’d welcome the sunrise
And shed not a tear –
As I layed there I smiled,
with the moon shining bright –
Happy Sober December
And to all… a Good Night!

Come join us for support to get sober, stay sober, or start getting your drinking under control, through the holiday season and into 2023. We’re talking about what you’re thinking about.
Sober October, Dry January, Feb Fast, and Dry July are all initiatives designed to raise money to help those afflicted with cancer. When the first of these initiatives was organized back in 2014, Dry July, the connection between routine alcohol use and 7 types of cancer was not yet commonly discussed. It was known but often the stories of this discovery were buried under the “feel good” articles about the health benefits of red wine.
One-month sober challenges have become a great focus for people who want to step out of the cage of gray-area drinking and try life alcohol-free.
In our BOOM Rethink the Drink Community we host a month-long alcohol-free inspiration challenge 12 times a year! Come check us out if you’ve had enough of feeling stuck in a cage of gray.
