A Million Little Pieces is written in a very different style from the previous book we discussed in our Boom Club, Dry by Augusten Burroughs. It’s not the kind of writing that easily lends itself to pulling inspiring quotes, but when I started reading A Million Little Pieces again, 9 years after my first reading, I immediately remembered how powerfully James Frey’s writing style had affected me in my first month sober. It was like returning to an old friend who had been there for me when I needed them most.
When I started reading A Million Little Pieces for the first time I was 10 days sober. I needed all the help I could get to stay sober at that point. I needed a constant feed of the right words spoken at the right moment in the right way and this book was that for me in back in 2015. James Frey’s writing style was so clean and straightforward it just pulled me in and let me get lost in the story which is exactly what I needed. I needed to get lost in someone else’s story of addiction and I needed to get lost in feeling inspired by their recovery.
