Someone recently said to me that she “feels so lucky to not have an addictive personality”.
This statement sat with me for a while.
I believed for as long as I can remember that I was one of those unlucky ones.. the one who got stuck with an “addictive personality”. I must be doomed. I drank too much coffee, smoked too many cigarettes, drank too much alcohol, too often, and couldn’t stop myself. I thought I must just be destined to a life of addiction.
BUT…..
My sobriety has shown me something so clearly: there is NO such thing as an addictive personality. There is Absolutely NOTHING wrong with my personality!!!! I wasn’t born defective and I’m not sentenced to a life of addiction!!

This idea of addictive personalities is a result of years and years worth of brainwashing! To convince us that the poison everyone is shoving down their throats isn’t THAT bad… it’s just that some people can’t handle it…..it’s just that some people are alcoholics….it’s just that some people will be addicted…..Fuck that noise!
I’m going to say it again… there is nothing wrong with our personalities!!! We were not born craving or wanting or needing poisons or toxins. We were shown and taught early on and throughout our entire lives that alcohol is an escape, that alcohol is sexy, fun, exciting, and helps us deal with trauma, anger, sadness, and loneliness. We were taught that alcohol makes celebrations, family time, get togethers and special occasions better. That it makes stressful times easier to manage. We see it on TV, in the movies, in ads, on billboards, in stores, restaurants, theaters, and sports arenas… ALCOHOL IS EVERYWHERE.
We were told and made to believe that alcohol GIVES us something. Of course, we would want it then right?!
But alcohol gives me NOTHING and TAKES everything.
Can some people drink moderately and be a “normal” drinker… sure… but alcohol is still a POISON. It changes the hardwiring and functioning of our brains. Alcohol suppresses our immune systems and destroys our livers. It is an addictive substance!!!!!!
Alcohol addiction does not discriminate against gender, age, financial status, sexual orientation, PERSONALITY TYPE, etc. Alcohol does exactly what it is intended to do…to make us want more and more and more.
There are many people struggling with their drinking. Facing the repercussions of putting the poison in their bodies and minds. Many will want to change, but even more won’t realize that they want to change in the first place. The brainwashing runs DEEP.
You are here because you want to change. You are SEEING, acknowledging, and accepting that your drinking is a problem and you need to stop. You can see how you’ve been brainwashed and tricked into thinking that alcohol will do something for you. It won’t. And maybe just maybe instead of thinking we have addictive personalities or we are “alcoholics” or there is something wrong with us, we can open our minds to the possibility that we are STRONG. That we can withstand anything because we’ve been through hell and back. That we are fighters and will do whatever we need to do to get healthy… and we can and will do it.

So yeah, Hi. I’m BG and I DO NOT have an addictive personality. I have been through a lot of trauma and pain in my life and chose to drink to cope and survive. But I DO NOT need to drink to cope any longer. My vision was clouded by alcohol’s false promises. There is NOTHING wrong with me. MY sobriety is giving me the clarity to see that I’ve been a survivor all along and I will continue to survive. Maybe, I really am the lucky one… because I’ve made it through the brainwashing and won’t ever fall for it ever again!
