A poem in response to someone asking why I’m not drinking;

You know your choice to drink is yours alone
My decision not to is mine to own
I’m not trying to change your mind
Please enjoy your wine
I’m curious though
Why you are asking me again?
Haven’t we already been over this?
As your friend could you respect my wishes here?
Although
What’s that I see in your eyes
Is it worry or fear?
What’s troubling you?
Are you drinking too much too?
I’ll let you into a secret
Many people do
But they keep on trying
And denying
Blocking out the memories of the regular hangovers they’re having
Choosing to go out again
Throwing their heads back, laughing
What struggles are hidden behind their eyes?
Where alcohol becomes the “normal” prize
If you are drinking too much too often Rethink the Drink .
