Sober Evolution from Surrender to Service
Read more: Sober Evolution from Surrender to ServiceI woke up this morning and for the first time in the last couple weeks I wasn’t filled with panic, anxiety and fear. It was a moment of surrender. It brought back that moment with my sobriety. When I surrendered to the fact that I had a problem; I accepted I couldn’t drink, I accepted…

The Power of Alcohol, Dry July Day 19, Alcohol-Free Inspiration
Read more: The Power of Alcohol, Dry July Day 19, Alcohol-Free InspirationOn Day 19 of Dry July, if you have coasted along with no serious sense of deprivation, with no slips or slides, CONGRATULATIONS! That is great! But if you are struggling to stay alcohol-free today consider how over-inflated the importance of alcohol is in our culture. Why do we give so much power to alcohol?…

Self Image and Change -Alcohol-Free Inspiration
Read more: Self Image and Change -Alcohol-Free InspirationDrinking alcohol is essential to a life well-lived. At least that is what we are taught. Long before we are old enough to drink legally we see adults drinking at every important event, every recreational activity, every party, and in many families, every night. If you get to the point as an adult where you…

Ditching the Shame When You Go Sober
Read more: Ditching the Shame When You Go SoberWhen I was drinking I lived in a cloud of shame. I had no idea how heavy that cloud was until I stopped drinking. I self-medicated stress, and anger, loneliness, and simple boredom with alcohol. I drank to celebrate and drank to socialize and felt shame that I lost control of how much I drank.…

Courting My Wild Twin or My Self-Reconciliation in Sobriety
Read more: Courting My Wild Twin or My Self-Reconciliation in SobrietyThis week I’ve been reading Courting the Wild Twin, by Martin Shaw, which explores the myth that we all have a wild twin who was tossed out the window when we were born, and who carries with them much of our own wildness and vitality. Old folktales about our wild twins encourage us to mend…

How Do You Tell People You Are Not Drinking?
Read more: How Do You Tell People You Are Not Drinking? One of the great things about doing an official alcohol-free marathon like Australia’s Dry July or Ocsober, is that you have an excuse not to drink. It is strange that we NEED an excuse not to drink alcohol but as anyone who has gone alcohol-free will tell you, people tend to question WHY you are…

6 Documentaries to Help You Rethink Alcohol Use and Abuse
Read more: 6 Documentaries to Help You Rethink Alcohol Use and AbuseThere are several documentaries on alcohol misuse and abuse that I think are well-balanced and reflect an experience that many of us can relate to. Wine o’Clock from Australia, Risky Drinking from the United States, and Drinking Yourself to Death made in the UK, all do a terrific job of profiling different levels of what is often called alcohol-use-disorder. They offer…

Alcohol-Free Inspiration
Read more: Alcohol-Free InspirationI am participating in Dry July as part of a long-term plan to stay alcohol-free. I didn’t have a “rock bottom”. No DUI. No severe accidents. No crazy behavior that resulted in family drama. No waking up in bed with a stranger. No, nothing that crazy. I just got tired of how my entire life…

Shame, Alcohol and Sobriety
Read more: Shame, Alcohol and SobrietyDoing nothing and feeling everything. With everyone stuck at home in revolving lockdowns during this pandemic, we have nowhere to look but inward and maybe backward hey? Which can be useful (ish) at highlighting our regrets and shame that maybe we’ve been pushing down, ignoring. Shame is something that most people struggle with when they…

“It was a random day of internet searching that brought me to Boozemusings Blog and to Boom Community, and my life has been changed by it. I needed some kind of “epiphany” for a mind change, and I have learned things about alcohol and its physical effects that have given me that kind of enlightenment. I check in several times a day and it is like meeting with my family. The resources here are incredible, and inexhaustible. I have quit lit books, etc. Will check out some of the other resources in others’ responses, but for me, Boom has been the answer. I feel it has to do with the tireless work of Boom’s creators. Thank you, Boom!!!!!!!”
