Cognitive Dissonance
Read more: Cognitive DissonanceI’ve been reading about Cognitive Dissonance. Simply put it’s when we say or believe one thing, but consciously do something opposite of that. It leads to anxiety, regret, shame, anger, and low self-esteem. When I was a little girl, we were all in the living room watching the news. Dad said something like “bloody…

Lasting Change is a Dance Not a Light Switch
Read more: Lasting Change is a Dance Not a Light SwitchWhen I stopped drinking almost 5 years ago with the help of this online community, I hoped that staying sober would be like turning a light switch. One day, I was a problem drinker living in the shadow of shame, and the next day, having accepted that I needed to stop drinking and deciding that…

Let’s Turn Alcohol Awareness Upside Down
Read more: Let’s Turn Alcohol Awareness Upside DownApril is Alcohol Awareness Month in the United States. Alcohol awareness is not something that I ever had a deficit of. What I wasn’t aware of was the possibility of loving living alcohol-free. How aware of alcohol are you? I don’t mean how aware are you of alcohol’s adverse health effects or the cost to…

Join Us in Discussing – A Million Little Pieces by James Frey
Read more: Join Us in Discussing – A Million Little Pieces by James FreyA Million Little Pieces is written in a very different style from the previous book we discussed in our Boom Club, Dry by Augusten Burroughs. It’s not the kind of writing that easily lends itself to pulling inspiring quotes, but when I started reading A Million Little Pieces again, 9 years after my first reading, I immediately remembered…

Don’t Become a Statistic
Read more: Don’t Become a StatisticDid you know that alcohol killed more under-65 Americans than COVID in 2020. In the United States and Canada alcohol was deemed an essential item during the COVID lockdowns and that appears to have been deadly effective! The rate of alcohol-related deaths in the U.S. rose 30% in the first year of COVID. We live…

Before and After – 1000 Days Sober
Read more: Before and After – 1000 Days SoberHave you ever found yourself looking at those “before and after” images of people who have gone sober and wished the “after shot” was you? Those “after shots” are inspiring, but getting there always seemed impossible to me. 1000 days ago I remember looking at the mess I had made of my life and wondering…

Sober Starts with I Can’t but Becomes I CAN!
Read more: Sober Starts with I Can’t but Becomes I CAN!I’m 4 years sober but even now, the thought of living without alcohol for forever is daunting. “Wait, I can’t drink anymore?” Face it, there are lots of things I can’t do anymore. I can’t carry my baby anymore – he’s 26, 180 lbs, and taller than me. I used to race him…. when he was…

Alone in My Field – Tuned in to Serenity
Read more: Alone in My Field – Tuned in to SerenityI had a long day yesterday, ended up working longer than usual. I got Irritated, Restless, Tired and Hungry, then the strike of an urge surfaced. URGH!!! HALT gained 2 letters and turned into HARLIT!! I reached for water (gulp!, gulp!, gulp!) and a green apple (crunch!, crunch!, crunch!). It seemed to pass… Closed our store,…

Read more: 9 Reasons I’m Finally Staying Sober – It’s Never Too LateToday I am 476 consecutive days sober. Like many others who are trying to stay sober I have had numerous Day 1s. The alcohol-free days lasted anywhere from a few weeks to nine months, off and on since 2015. But this time is different. How do I know I’ll stay sober? My ambivalence is gone.…

“It was a random day of internet searching that brought me to Boozemusings Blog and to Boom Community, and my life has been changed by it. I needed some kind of “epiphany” for a mind change, and I have learned things about alcohol and its physical effects that have given me that kind of enlightenment. I check in several times a day and it is like meeting with my family. The resources here are incredible, and inexhaustible. I have quit lit books, etc. Will check out some of the other resources in others’ responses, but for me, Boom has been the answer. I feel it has to do with the tireless work of Boom’s creators. Thank you, Boom!!!!!!!”
