Surfing the Waves of Emotion in Early Sobriety
Read more: Surfing the Waves of Emotion in Early SobrietyEmotions make life worthwhile. Sadness, love, disappointment, compassion, anger, gratitude, embarrassment, and optimism are just a few of the many emotions that give life dimension. These feelings, alongside our thinking abilities, are what makes us human and makes life interesting. But I used to drink away my negative feelings and in the process drank myself…

What Dry July Could Mean To You
Read more: What Dry July Could Mean To YouDry July is a meaningful time for me. To me, Dry July is “take back your power month”. The first full month I spent sober after a 10-year-long relapse was in 2020 as a participant in the Dry July challenge in the Boom Rethink the Drink Community. Back then, I couldn’t go more than a…

Join us in Discussing the UnPickled Holiday Survival Guide by Jean McCarthy
Read more: Join us in Discussing the UnPickled Holiday Survival Guide by Jean McCarthyJean McCarthy’s book, Unpickled Holiday Survival Guide, was written to help people who are newly sober maneuver the alcohol-soaked obstacle course that we all run between Halloween and New Year’s Day. When I suggested the book for our Boom Rethink the Drink Community Book Club, I was expecting it to be a simple, practical guide…

Trading the Drama of Drink for Serenity
Read more: Trading the Drama of Drink for SerenityAlmost everybody, problem drinker or not, is familiar with the Serenity Prayer. It is so synonymous with alcohol abuse that I think it creates this idea that serenity should be an automatic result of going Alcohol-Free. I can’t say that’s the way it worked for me. Most of my attempts at sobriety were anything but…

Join Us In Discussing Drinking a Love Story by Caroline Knapp
Read more: Join Us In Discussing Drinking a Love Story by Caroline KnappWhat does it feel like to be addicted to alcohol? In Drinking a Love Story Caroline Knapp defines it like this “…somewhere inside I understood that if I kept this up, kept drinking and working and flailing around like this, I’d die, slowly, but literally kill myself. The truth gnaws at you. In periodic flashes…

It’s Not Easy to Stop Drinking But It’s Worth It
Read more: It’s Not Easy to Stop Drinking But It’s Worth ItApril is Alcohol Awareness Month in the United States and that makes this month a great time to consider changing your relationship with alcohol. If you’ve decided to stop drinking try to think of stopping as a new beginning. A renewal. A rebirth. A time to walk away from the drama and the shame that too…

Cognitive Dissonance
Read more: Cognitive DissonanceI’ve been reading about Cognitive Dissonance. Simply put it’s when we say or believe one thing, but consciously do something opposite of that. It leads to anxiety, regret, shame, anger, and low self-esteem. When I was a little girl, we were all in the living room watching the news. Dad said something like “bloody…

Lasting Change is a Dance Not a Light Switch
Read more: Lasting Change is a Dance Not a Light SwitchWhen I stopped drinking almost 5 years ago with the help of this online community, I hoped that staying sober would be like turning a light switch. One day, I was a problem drinker living in the shadow of shame, and the next day, having accepted that I needed to stop drinking and deciding that…

Let’s Turn Alcohol Awareness Upside Down
Read more: Let’s Turn Alcohol Awareness Upside DownApril is Alcohol Awareness Month in the United States. Alcohol awareness is not something that I ever had a deficit of. What I wasn’t aware of was the possibility of loving living alcohol-free. How aware of alcohol are you? I don’t mean how aware are you of alcohol’s adverse health effects or the cost to…

“It was a random day of internet searching that brought me to Boozemusings Blog and to Boom Community, and my life has been changed by it. I needed some kind of “epiphany” for a mind change, and I have learned things about alcohol and its physical effects that have given me that kind of enlightenment. I check in several times a day and it is like meeting with my family. The resources here are incredible, and inexhaustible. I have quit lit books, etc. Will check out some of the other resources in others’ responses, but for me, Boom has been the answer. I feel it has to do with the tireless work of Boom’s creators. Thank you, Boom!!!!!!!”
