When I stopped drinking five years ago, I was participating in an online community where some people were committed to never drinking again and others to a short term alcohol detox like Dry July. What I learned in that community that I may not have learned in a community strictly focused on long term sobriety, was that staying sober is literally living the day that you are in. It is about choosing to stay alcohol-free today and not worrying about what tomorrow will bring.
Day 8 of Dry July – One week down congratulations!
It is just so tempting…
To have a day off
Haven’t I worked hard enough?
There has to be joy in life right?
I can handle a few
And not look a sight
But you have chosen to stay alcohol free today! So enjoy that day and let yourself relax :
Are you struggling to stay alcohol-free today? Remember … You do not have to climb Mt. Everest this afternoon. You do not have to clear 7ft on the high jump, or discover a practical method of cold fusion. In fact, you don’t have to do anything at all. You just have to NOT do something – not lift a glass with booze to your lips. And the only time you have to NOT do that is right now. The only drink you have to not drink is the next one. So chill out. Don’t let that Little Voice, or anyone else, make a mountain out of our molehill. Just don’t drink right now.

It’s day 8 of Dry July so sit back and relax. Own the space and the day that you are in. related reading How to Stop Drinking Away the Pain

And don’t let the bull shit in
It feels like the ground beneath me is slipping
Out of control
Tempers rising then dipping
All the idiots socialising
They must be tripping
Not heeding the alarm
I need something
To help me stay calm
My purring cat
She senses that
Curled up on my knee
She’s soothing me
Filing down the rough edges of my day
Helping me to feel
Things will be okay
I want to turn my off feelings
Get comfortably numb
It wouldn’t be a comfort drinking though
If I was always wanting some
I’ve a better plan
Instead of having wine and letting the alcohol thug in
I’ll just look at what I can control
And choose not to let the bullshit in
