Breathe and Allow
Read more: Breathe and AllowIt would be great if every transformational path—embracing sobriety included—was all forward motion. Floating on a pink cloud of giddy relief and wonder at this whole new world, energy surging, creative and sexual juices flowing, newly found pleasures, new rewarding habits taking hold, relationships not only healing but soaring to new heights of intimacy. Unfortunately,…

Sobriety is a Portal
Read more: Sobriety is a PortalUnlike many people who skulk into their first AA meeting—broken, unraveled, undone, weeping uncontrollably—I fairly waltzed through the door, beaming like the sun. They talk about hitting rock bottom but for me, it was a perfect storm: The decision to live out loud, to be there for my children, to have optimum health, and to…

Non-Drinking versus Drinking Lives
Read more: Non-Drinking versus Drinking LivesYou have to build a non-drinking life and allow drinking to become more and more irrelevant as each day passes. Embrace this way of living and love it. When you can’t see the point of a holiday without getting smashed you need to have a word with yourself.

If something’s not working for you, fix it, change it, direct it.
Read more: If something’s not working for you, fix it, change it, direct it.Someone texted me this today: If something’s not working for you, fix it, change it, direct it. The comment was not made about trying to be Alcohol-Free, just my life in general. However, I did start thinking about it in the AF sense. Here I am at Day 4 alcohol-free. I feel okay – not…

What Works – Two years Alcohol-Free
Read more: What Works – Two years Alcohol-FreeI used to stop drinking for a month, pat myself on the back, drink again and slide back to drinking just as much. I used to go a month without alcohol and count the days until I could drink again. I couldn’t imagine a life without drinking as part of it- in some way. I…

Learn it Through the Doing
Read more: Learn it Through the DoingI’ve heard that when Meryl Streep first reads a script she’s got a red pen at hand. If she comes across a word or phrase of her dialogue that she intuitively flinches at or that doesn’t make sense to her, she circles it. Then she keeps on reading. Later, as she works on the character…

Staring it Right in the Eyes
Read more: Staring it Right in the EyesI look away when things are scary. When I’m filled with fear, I try to control other things because I feel like I can’t handle it. I get light-headed, nauseous, sweaty, panicked. There is a ringing in my ears. Sometimes when it’s not as bad, I just procrastinate instead. I do laundry, shop online, watch…

My Beautiful Mind at 1000 days Sober
Read more: My Beautiful Mind at 1000 days SoberI can’t remember ever aspiring to be sober. The word sober always seemed sad, dull, and heavy to me. When I was young, when I was checking out adults to see which type I’d like to become, the sober adults seemed rather stiff. I was either told that they couldn’t drink because they had a…

Reflection
Read more: ReflectionI am tracking my progress with a purple heart. At first…..I thought “no!” because purple hearts are reserved for heroes who show enormous courage to save another. And then I realized: I am a hero. Recovery is taking all the courage I’ve ever had and some I didn’t know I had…..I am saving me. Yup.…

“It was a random day of internet searching that brought me to Boozemusings Blog and to Boom Community, and my life has been changed by it. I needed some kind of “epiphany” for a mind change, and I have learned things about alcohol and its physical effects that have given me that kind of enlightenment. I check in several times a day and it is like meeting with my family. The resources here are incredible, and inexhaustible. I have quit lit books, etc. Will check out some of the other resources in others’ responses, but for me, Boom has been the answer. I feel it has to do with the tireless work of Boom’s creators. Thank you, Boom!!!!!!!”
